Cocktail Countdown Day 5: The Champagne Cocktail

CocktailCountdown

The recipe for this (I used this one) seemed too easy to be an actual cocktail. Sugar, bitters, champagne, and a twist of lemon (if you wanted)—where was the hard liquor? Not that I’m complaining. We were in the last day of a heat wave yesterday (it broke today, thank the Lord), so some chilled champagne just on its own sounded heavenly.

I assembled the ingredients, this time in the middle of the afternoon, since it was Sunday and I had nowhere to be:

I was actually going to use a champagne flute for this one, since we do have those, but when I went to get them down, I realized we’d put them in a pretty much inaccessible part of a cabinet. Because we never use them. Also, the kids were awake and it was pretty much guaranteed that one of them would knock over the flute and destroy it. So stemless wine glass it was:

The bitters in the sugar cube turned it a rather unattractive color, but the lemon peel looks nice. Since it was pretty much just champagne, it was also nice to drink. There’s something pretty decadent about sipping champagne on a Sunday afternoon as work on book covers. I suppose that’s why mimosas are so popular. And the heat become somewhat more bearable to closer to got to the bottom of the glass. So this one was a definite winner.

Next up, we have the White Russian. Be prepared for at least half of the write up being nothing more than Big Lebowski quotes.
