Cocktail Countdown Day 3: The Mai Tai

The Mai Tai is deeply associated with the tiki craze of mid-century America (and we’ve got a scene in Star Dust that involves tiki torches), so it seemed a very appropriate choice for the challenge. And even though it’s probably the silliest thing in Disneyland, I’m kind of fond of the Tiki Room there. The song’s pretty catchy.

Once again, I assembled the ingredients. (I used this recipe here.) Only this time I had to make Rock Candy Syrup (2 parts sugar to 1 part water), which turned out to be surprisingly easy.

This time, the kids were up, but that’s OK, cause that’s how we roll on a Friday. (It was also bananas hot here yesterday, so we ate take out, which always makes a Friday go easier.) I used my immersion blender cup as a cocktail shaker, since I don’t have one. It worked just fine. I probably added more lime juice than the recipe called for, but I love the taste of limes. After shaking till condensation formed on the cup, I poured it into a glass:

The first sip was great. Not too sweet, not too citrus-y, and no overpowering taste of alcohol. Mr. Turner came home as I was half way through it, but I didn’t offer him a sip since I wanted it all for myself. We put the kids to bed, and I finished my mid-century cocktail as we watched a comedy about tech start ups, which is about as 21st century as you can get. All in all, a good Friday night.

Tonight we have the French 75, a champagne cocktail with gin. Gin is… not my favorite, so I admit to being a bit apprehensive about this one. But it’s got champagne, so maybe it’ll all even out.
